Counseling

From time to time in our lives, we encounter situations where we experience difficulty.  Often surprised, we are not sure what to do.  We may be confused and unsure of how to act.  Feeling some loss of control; energy; self; relationship; peace; we may become depressed or angry.  This can easily lead to stress which may bring on behavior changes or physical symptoms that are signals designed to get our attention so we do something about what is bothering us.

Counseling is a process which encourages open and intimate communication between the client and the therapist for the purpose of developing new strategies/behaviors which will enable the client to be more successful in reaching his/her personal goals.  By seeking counseling you are taking an important step in solving the personal problems that have been bothering you.  And, any problem that you have not been able to resolve to your satisfaction is appropriate to bring to the counseling situation.  Sometimes during counseling it becomes apparent that other services are needed such as psychiatric consultation, medical consultation, legal services, and financial assistance.  We will assist you in obtaining additional assistance where appropriate.

Brief Therapy - Most of the time when we are faced with the need for some help in resolving problems, it can be taken care of with only a few sessions.  There is the recognition that the difficulty is situational.  The approach is to problem solve as quickly as possible.  Frequently, the sessions range from as few as one to about five or six.

Longer Therapy - Occasionally, an individual or couple - sometimes a family - presents with a problem which does not lend itself to a brief approach.  The problem is serious and developed over a long period of time or the individual/couple/family is interested in a growth process.  The approach is more open ended and may last from a few months to considerably longer depending on the goals of the client.

Whatever your goals are, whatever your needs are, you can be assured that we will thoroughly discuss them  with you and that nothing will be done without your permission and full knowledge.  You are always in control of the counseling process.
